Safe, eco-friendly poroelastic road surface

The SEPOR project deals with development of an innovative poroelastic road surface characterized by extremely low road traffic noise, water permeability, properties of fire suppression from spills of liquid fuels, good properties in terms of rolling resistance and high skid resistance. World development of poroelastic pavements is stil lat the experimental stage where insufficient durability is one of the most important issue to be solved. Poroelastic pavement consists of 20% (by weight) of rubber granulate coming from scrap tyres. That leads to saving of natural stone aggregate and optimal utilization of used car tyres. That implementation of poroelastic wearing course leads to important traffic noise reduction (up to 12 dB comparing with a typical widely used SMA11 pavement) and makes if difficult, or even eliminate the spread of tire of spilled liquid fuels, making them ideal for use in tunnels, gas stations and terminal areas. The main goals of SEPOR project is to improve its durability by optimization of poroelastic mix composition, improvement of the production proces and increasing the interlayer bonding strenght. The project also aims to optimize skid resistance and noise reduction. Experimental test sections of poroelastic pavements will be constructed within a trafficked road and tested for noise, rolling resistance, skid resistance and fire suppression properties.
