Development of a full bipedal pedestrian HSI model taking into account the interaction between pedestrians and the footbridge structure.
In recent years, much effort has been put into developing pedestrian models and analytical procedures to determine the dynamic response of a footbridge. Still, the most popular and simplest way to model the pedestrian load is to take it as massless concentrated forces. However, dynamic analyses using only force models cannot account for the dynamic effects of the human body mechanism and the resulting HSI. The applicant plans to carry out part of her analysis at the University of Milan. She could carry out her work there under the supervision of Professor Maria Gabriella Mulas, who is a respected authority on the modelling of pedestrian loads on footbridges and the dynamics of footbridges. The collaboration, with someone who has a great deal of experience, will allow the applicant to significantly improve her own qualifications and will certainly enhance the scientific value of the results obtained. The applicant has received an invitation from the University of Milan, in the role of visiting professor. The internship trip will allow her to establish long-term international cooperation and thus apply for other scientific competitions and funding from external institutions with international reach. The trip would take place over two three-week periods. On the first trip, analyses will be initiated and preliminary research will be carried out. Due to the labour-intensive nature of the analyses and the time-consuming nature of the dynamic calculations, it is planned to continue the work and research upon return to the home university. A summary of all the material collected together with the development of the final conclusions is planned for the second part of the internship at the University of Milan, under the supervision of Professor Maria Gabriella Mulas. The method proposed by the author of the proposal will certainly be a novel solution and the author's contribution to the development of the field of pedestrian bridge dynamics. The introduced methods of modelling the bipedal pedestrian will allow a better estimation of the dynamic parameters of the structure, already at the design stage, and thus allow the optimisation of design processes in the future.
