STORM- Stratospheric Toxin Migration

As part of the activities of the SimLE interdepartmental scientific society at Gdansk University of Technology, we plan to develop the STORM- stratospheric toxin migration project. The goal is to develop a sampling platform that will retrieve stratospheric air from appropriate altitudes. With the current trend of worldwide exploration of environmental changes, such as global warming or high doses of UV radiation, it is crucial to comprehensively study areas such as biodiversity or migration of volatile compounds, including potential toxins. The plan for the project is to purchase SPE columns with selected absorbent, which will help easily retrieve chemical compounds of interest. The absorbent in the columns is protected by membranes on which microorganisms living in the stratosphere are deposited. We also want to expand the project with the purchase of additional PID sensors, thanks to which we are able to measure and read the concentration of specific compounds caught along the entire flight path of the stratospheric balloon, which will allow us to visualize how particular pollutants are distributed over given kilometers. Analysis of the collected compounds and microorganisms will be carried out in a laboratory at the chemistry department. We currently have a prototype built and tested. The prototype has shown us that we are able to develop the project further by augmenting it with the aforementioned sensors and adding more SPE columns. The initial evaluation of the experiment has a great impact on expanding our knowledge of this subject of the composition of the stratosphere, and thus learning more about possible toxins and pollutants migrating there. Climate change and global warming continue to be key research objects for many scientists and the study of chemical compounds has a key impact on these issues.
