Financial knowledge, financial behavior and economics of wealth in Poland. Empirical identification of interdependencies.
The main goal of this project is to acquire the empirical evidence on the interdependence between financial knowledge, financial behavior and household welfare in Poland. Thanks to this project, the knowledge on the ways and effects of financial decision-making will be broadened. According to the English-language scientific literature, various forms of accumulation of assets and debts indicate different attitudes towards financial issues and the possibility of reverse causality. The existing research results signal the connection of the level of financial knowledge with financial behaviors (saving, investments, accumulation of debts) as well as the occurrence of correlations between financial competencies and creation of assets and liabilities. In the context of Poland, in-depth research on this subject has not yet been carried out. This is due to the lack of representative, generally available micro-data. However, such research is developing intensively in other countries, in particular the United States and parts of Western Europe. The proposed project fills this research gap. As part of the planned research, the author proposes to conduct a pilot survey on a representative sample of Poles. The postulated research is aimed at obtaining answers to questions regarding: a) knowledge of financial issues, including gender, age, social status and economic well-being, b) assessment of the financial attitudes of the society, taking into account the demographic structure of savings, investments and mortgage debt and consumer credits, c) identification of interdependencies between financial knowledge and financial behavior, d) correlation between the attitude towards saving, investment, indebtedness and wealth.
