Integrated technology for nitrogen and phosphorus removal and recovery in municipal wastewater treatment plants.

The main objective of the proposed project is to develop an integrated technology for nitrogen and phosphorus removal and recovery in municipal wastewater treatment plants. The idea of the project is to remove and recover nitrogen and phosphorus compounds contained in the sludge digester liquors in the form of ammonium sulphate ((NH4)2SO4) and magnesium ammonium phosphate (MgNH4 (PO4) 6H2O), also known as struvite. Both compounds have a high fertilizing potential and can constitute a product on the mineral fertilizer market. The proposed technology combines physico-chemical processes (struvite precipitation and membrane gas separation) and biological processes (deammonification). The planned project includes three main Work Packages. Firstly, basic research will be carried out to determine the characteristics and efficiency of ammonium nitrogen recovery using gas permeable membrane (Work Package 1). In the next stage of the research experimental studies of the integrated technology for the removal and recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds from the sludge digester liquors will be carried out (Work Package 2). The analysis of energy consumption and carbon footprint of the proposed solution and determination of its impact on the efficiency of wastewater treatment in the main-stream will be performed using mathematical modeling and computer simulation (Work Package 3). The project is consistent with the priority research areas of the GUT. As part of the project, two doctorates will be carried out, including one within the framework of the double doctorate program, which is an important scientific program developed in collaboration with the GUT and the University of Palermo (Italy). Project results will be published in international journals and presented at international scientific conferences.
