IMPACT OF DIRECT CURRENT ON NITRIFYING BIOMASS

Abstract

Effects of short term exposure of nitrifying biomass to direct current were studied. DC was applied to mixed liquor from municipal BNR plant using graphite electrodes in no substrate limiting conditions. Both, ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) populations were affected by the current, however in opposite ways. The AOB population activity was inhibited by applied voltage. Activity decrease was almost linear and it dropped to 78% at 19 V. In contrary, the NOB population activity was stimulated. Relative NOB activity reached maximum of 130% at 10 V. Relatively low decrease of overall nitrification rate by 3.5% at 5 V, indicates that electrochemical phosphorus recovery processes could be successfully applied simultaneously with biological ammonia removal.
