Multivariate analysis of impedance data obtained for coating systems of varying thickness applied on steel

Abstract

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has proven to be a valuable test method for the electrochemical characterization of protective coatings on metals. The common way of analysis in impedance spectroscopy is to model the impedance spectrum by means of an equivalent circuit and to extract the quantity of interest using optimization techniques. A model, corresponding to the behavior of the sample under testing, is important for information extraction. Necessity to build up an equivalent circuit can lead to ambiguities because selection of a suitable circuit in some cases can be a complex procedure. To overcome this disadvantage an alternative approach for analysis of impedance spectra was developed. The presented approach does not use the stage of an equivalent circuit selection. Using multivariate methods (e.g., principal component analysis – PCA) it is possible to extract specific information direct from the measured data without the need of an a priori adoption of a specific equivalent circuit. Results of multivariate analysis of a coating system with varying number of layers on steel as a function of immersion time in 3% NaCl using this novel approach are presented. The benefits of this approach are discussed.
