seafloor characterisation combined approach using multibeam sonar echo signal processing and image analysis
Abstract
The authors propose the approach to seafloor characterisation which relies on the combined, concurrent use of two different techniques: (i) multibeam sonar image analysis and (ii) multibeam seabed echoes processing. The first technique is based on constructing the grey-level sonar images of the seabed extracted from the echoes received in the consecutive soundings. Then, the set of parameters describing the local region of sonar image is calculated. These parameters are related to the first as well as to the second order statistics of the grey level. The second technique relies on the multibeam echo signal processing, similarly as in single beam classification. The parameters of an echo envelope are calculated, including the echo energy and its statistics, as well as the set of echo shape descriptors. Calculations are repeated for each beam allowing the estimation of parameter dependence on seafloor incident angle. Next, the characteristic features of the obtained angular dependence (such as slope and range) are calculated. Finally, the features obtained from these two techniques are combined and used in seabed supervised classification. The obtained preliminary results demonstrate the classification performance improvement.
