Biography
Professor Dariusz Mikielewicz – born on February 6, 1967. in Gdansk. Here in 1974 he enrolled first to the Elementary School No. 17, and then in the Grammar School No. 5, named after Stefan Żeromski in Gdansk-Oliwa. After graduating from the Secondary School, with honors, in 1985 he successfully passed the entrance exams to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Technical University of Gdansk, where he graduated with a very good result in 1990, specializing in Energy Machinery and Systems.
Interest in scientific work led him to undertake research at the University of Manchester in the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering being the recipient of a doctoral scholarship funded by the University of Manchester. In 1994 he defended his doctoral thesis titled “Comparative studies of models of turbulence in the convection conditions of heated mixed in vertical pipes taking into account the variables of physical properties” under the supervision of Professor J. Derek Jackson. The PhD thesis was distincted with the Prime Minister Award on April 26, 1996.
In February 1994 he returned to Poland, where he was employed as a specialist at the Institute of Fluid Flow Machinery, Polish Academy of Sciences in the Department of Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer. On July 15, 1994, he began again to work in the UK in Berkeley Nuclear Laboratories as an engineer, where he worked until 31 August 1996. He was employed in the laboratory serving as a technological background of all nuclear power stations in the UK. He was involved in the development of the nuclear reactor simulation code PANTHER (AGR and PWR Reactor Thermal Hydraulic Safety Code) simulating operation of Magnox and Advanced Gas-Cooled reactors. The work focused on the issues related to modeling of thermal-hydraulic phenomena occurring in the operation of these types of reactors, as well as verification and modification of the simulation code.
From October 1, 1996 is employed as an assistant professor in the Department of Thermal Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Gdańsk University of Technology. In September 1999 he was invited by the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering to take the position of Vice-Dean for Basic Education. Since 2002 he became the Vice-Dean for Education. On November 15, 2002, he presented the Council of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering the thesis with his habilitation dissertation titled "Modelling of momentum and heat transfer in two-phase boundary layer". Habilitation thesis, along with related publications have been distincted with the President of the Academy of Sciences Award in the name of B. Stefanowski in 2003. From May 1, 2005 he is employed as an associate professor, and from July 1, 2012 as a full professor at the faculty. In 2004-2008 he was the member of the Science Council at the Ministry for Science and Education for technical sciences. Since 2007 is an elected member of the Committee of Thermodynamics and Combustion PAS, and since 2015 member of the Presidium of that Committee. From 2015 he is a member of the Committee for Basic Problems of Energy at the Polish Academy of Sciences. From 1 September 2016 he is acting as the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
Main directions of his scientific activity come down to work related to:
heat transfer by boiling and condensation in the flow, non-isothermal vapor-liquid two-phase flow, modeling of bubbly two-phase flows,
intensification of heat exchange by natural and forced convection and phase change, development of high performance heat exchangers,
Spreading and heat exchange of one- and two-phase jets impinging on the surface, precision cooling of surfaces using microjets, evaporation in thin layers of liquid,
issues related to non-conventional devices and systems for energy conversion,
distributed energy, primarily micro CHP working according to the organic Clausius-Rankine cycle, energy policy,
extension of the chain of biomass conversion for the production of components for various processes.
In his scientific work he published more than 270 papers (including 8 monographs, 9 chapters in books, 20 articles from the JCR list, more than 50 articles on an international scale, more than 100 citations according to Web of Science, H = 6). He has supervised 10 completed doctoral projects and is tutoring additional 4. He was the director of 11 research projects funded by KBN, Higher Education, NCN also 7FP EU. He is a reviewer in prestigious scientific journals from the JCR list such as the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, International Journal of Multiphase Flow, International Journal of Refrigeration, Applied Thermal Engineering, Energy, Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science, International Journal of Thermal Sciences and others. He took part in reviews of a number of qualification works including 20 doctoral theses, 3 habilitation dissertations and 1 application for the title of professor.
For his achievements he was awarded the Silver Cross of Merit and the Medal of the National Education Commission.
