Rector in 2016-2019

He was born on 10 December, 1949 in Mogilno. He graduated in 1972 at the Faculty of Chemistry at Gdańsk University of Technology, obtaining a master's degree in chemical engineering. In 1972 he started working at Gdańsk University of Technology, where in 1978 he defended his doctoral thesis and in 1985 he completed his habilitation. He was appointed an associate professor in 1991 and he received the title of full professor in 1998. He was awarded the academic title of professor in 1995.

At Gdańsk University of Technology he was the deputy dean for education (1990-1996) and dean of the Faculty of Chemistry (1996-2002; 2005-2012). In the years 1995-2019 he was also the head of the Department of Analytical Chemistry.

In the years 2002-2005 and 2012-2016 he was the head of the Doctoral Studies at the Faculty of Chemistry. He was the author and co-author of over 1,000 publications, including 8 books on pollution analytics and environmental monitoring, green analytical chemistry, food analytics, and also a promoter of 66 doctors. He also received 13 patents.

He was the creator of methods for the determination of air pollution indicators, a co-creator of new methods of producing gas reference mixtures and non-matrix materials and air quality testing techniques. He created the Gdańsk school of analytical chemistry.

He also held numerous functions outside Gdańsk University of Technology: in 2007-2016 he was a member of the Central Commission for Degrees and Titles, and in 2016-2019 a vice-chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Polish Technical Universities (KRPUT).

In the years 1994-2019 he was a member of the Committee of Analytical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, which he chaired in 2007-2015. In the years 2011-2014 he was a member of the Sea Research Committee, the Polish Chemical Society, where in 2004-2009 he was the chairman of the Gdańsk branch. He was also a member of many scientific councils (including the Institute of Oceanology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology) and international scientific societies (International Association of Environmental Analytical Chemistry - IAEAC, International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry - IUPAC, Advisory Board International Association of Environmental Analytical Chemistry, Romanian Society of Analytical Chemistry). In 2017, he became a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts in the section of natural sciences.

He was on 9 editorial boards of scientific and popular science magazines from the Philadelphia list, among others: "Critical Reviews in Environmental Science and Technology", "Critical Review in Analytical Chemistry", "Polish Journal of Environmental Studies".

He was awarded the honor of professor honoris causa of the University of Bucharest (2000), doctor honoris causa of the Medical University of Gdańsk (2015) and the Jarosław Dąbrowski Military University of Technology in Warsaw (2015).

In 2001, he was honored with the Jan Hevelius Scientific Award of the City of Gdańsk, twice with the Award of the Prime Minister, the awards of the Minister of Science, Higher Education and Technology and the Minister of Science and Higher Education. He was awarded the Viktor Kemula Medal and the Medal of Jędrzej Śniadecki of the Polish Chemical Society, Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, posthumously the Commander's Cross with the Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta and other state and departmental decorations.

He died on April 14, 2019 in Gdańsk.
