    W pracy zastosowano metodę SFA (Substance Flow Analysis) do oceny źródeł transportu i składowania rtęci w wodzie na terenie UE. W wyniku analizy stopnia zanieczyszczenia środowiska w przeszłości jak i scenariuszy zmian tego zanieczyszczenia w przyszłości stwierdzono, że spalanie paliw zawierających rtęć, takich jak węgiel i olej stanowi główne źródło zanieczyszczenia wody rtęcią.
