Investigation on combined effects of rotational stiffness of column bases and soil flexibility on seismic response and safety of structural steel buildings

The main objective of this research project (i.e., a scientific internship at the University of California, Davis, which is counted among the most prestigious universities in the world) is to investigate the combined effects of rotational stiffness of column bases and soil flexibility on seismic response and safety of structural steel buildings. According to the research hypothesis, additional consideration of ground conditions will result in a further change in the redistribution of internal forces (and thus in the location of plastic hinges), which may have a significant impact on the seismic response and safety of the analyzed steel structures. The direct final effect of the scientific internship will be the preparation of at least one scientific publication, which will be sent to one of the top scientific periodicals. In a broader perspective, the planned trip for a scientific internship is aimed at establishing long-term cooperation with American scientists in the field of joint research and joint application for research grants (both national and international), which may enable, among others, conducting experimental research related to the discussed issue.
