In this project the role of biochar amendment to porous-media based wastewater treatment systems will be investigated. The experimental works will be conducted at two-stage system, composed of a vertical flow constructed wetland bed (first stage), followed by Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) system (second stage). Both treatment filters will be filled with sand amended with biochar. Different biochar/sand ratios, and different types of biochar, differing by feedstock material, pyrolysis process temperature, and granulation will be tested. The planned investigations will be performed in laboratory, meso- and pilot scale, and will focus on the impact of biochar amendment on hydraulic and sorption properties of porous-media based treatment systems, and on the removal efficiency of carbon and nitrogen compounds, as well as two pharmaceuticals (ibuprofen, tramadol). The investigations will also contribute to recognition of the impact of biochar amendment on development of microbiome and plants, two significant components of the treatment systems. The data obtained during experimental works will be used for verification of numerical models, which will be applied for numerical simulations of wastewater treatment process in biochar/sand filters. Holistic approach proposed in the project, which integrates experimental works and numerical simulations, will bring new knowledge on the impact of biochar on hydraulic and sorption properties of porous-media based treatment systems (constructed wetlands and SAT), and on the processes of removal of nutrients and pharmaceuticals.
