Experimental investigations and modelling of the working fluid distribution in minichannel and minigap plate heat exchangers

The "maldistribution" phenomenon can be crucial for the heat and flow efficiency of the entire heat exchanger. The applicant would like to take up this topic. He has already initially investigated the model minichannel and minigap heat exchangers available in the Department of Energy and Industrial Apparatus for the distribution of the working medium in their structures under specific cyclic conditions suitable for reverse thermosyphon application. Observations led to interesting conclusions, however, due to the limited workshop, they concerned only the adiabatic single-phase flow for one working medium (water) and only experimental studies. The proposed project would aim for a significant development of this work with regard to heat exchange (single phase and two-phase), various configurations of model heat exchangers and various operating factors (including wetting and non-wetting liquids). Preliminary studies, which were mentioned above have shown the importance of shaping the collectors distributing the medium between minichannels sets or in minigaps, the applicant is now going to focus particular attention on this aspect. Another important topic would be numerical modeling. These issues coincide with the topic of the applicant's doctoral dissertation, where he plans to deal in detail with the issue of medium distribution in heat exchangers. In his opinion, there is availability to significantly improve the distribution of the working medium in minigap and minichannel plate heat exchangers, both in cyclic and continuous work, by carefully shaping the inlet and outlet manifolds and other elements of the flow system - this is the thesis the applicant would like to confirm based on experiment and modeling. Research methodology It is planned to conduct a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of the flow of working medium in a single model plate heat exchanger with minichannel or minigap structure. Geometries of different sizes (falling within the minichannel/minigap criteria) will be studied under flow conditions with heat exchange. For single-phase flow, the cyclical operation of the exchanger is taken into consideration, while for boiling (two-phase) flow - cyclic or continuous operation. A large part of the visualization techniques are planned, among others use of the camera for rapid shooting to record the actual image of the flow of the medium and the structures of two-phase flows. An attempt will be made to combine these issues with
