Farm monitoring via real-time soil sensing

The FAMOSOS project aims to develop a measurement system that will provide real-time data on soil condition - nitrogen concentration and saturation, moisture, pH, oxygen availability. The provision of real-time data enables understanding of the nitrogen cycle in the soil and supporting decision-making processes related to soil management. To ensure efficient and reliable data collection, a wireless underground sensor network will be used, in which wireless sensors will be buried and communicate with each other or with nodes located above the ground. The aim of the project is to develop (through the convergence of information and communication technologies (ICT), laboratory and field experiments and process-based modeling) a sustainable climate-friendly model of soil management that enables sustainable food production, increases soil carbon sequestration and maintains soil health . The solutions developed by the project will be installed on farms in Germany, Portugal and Finland to test a range of farming systems, including conventionally and ecologically managed and diversified cropping and grassland systems. The main role of GUT is to provide innovative radio solutions operating in the VHF/UHF range (<1 GHz) enabling communication with sensors that will be buried in the soil for long-term measurements of its parameters, which will allow for permanent integration of GG solutions within the developed sensors. The results of the project will be a very good starting point for new project applications that can be submitted under the Horizon Europe program, aimed at developing new innovative technological solutions that can be used in other areas of application. The implementation of this project will therefore allow in the future to continue work as part of interdisciplinary HEU projects, both increasing the capabilities of the system developed under this project for the needs of precision farming, as well as developing new sensors for other implementation areas (e.g. smart buildings and factories, maritime industry) with new radio interfaces. After achieving measurable results in this project, it will be possible to establish new cooperation with project partners and jointly create at least 1-2 project proposals for the Horizon Europe programme.
