A new tool for studying the coelectrolysis process in Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells using carbon dioxide isotopologue

The project entitled ‘A new tool for studying the coelectrolysis process in Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells using carbon dioxide isotopologues’ focuses on the implementation of a completely novel and direct measurement technique that involves the use of CO2 isotopolgue – C18O2 – to properly define the electrochemical and chemical activity of the Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell toward the coelectrolysis process. The research will focus on the construction, calibration, and validation of a novel measuring unit, which would be equipped with a gas chromatograph (GC), FTIR spectrophotometer, and quadruple mass spectrometer (QMS). Mass spectrometry will allow for proper measurement of 18O-bearing species at the air electrode side. At the same time, electrical characterization by the means of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) will be held, providing the complementary data about the cells’ work. At first, measurements will be performed on conventional state-of-the-art cells as a comparison to the previous results obtained by our research team. Subsequently, the cells will be modified via a wet impregnation method and properly tested to determine the dependencies between the cell alterations and the electrocatalytic efficiency. The modification would focus on microstructural changes and the introduction of secondary metals or structural promoters (e.g. basic/acidic sites amout change). Last but not least, the Distribution of Relaxation Times (DRT) method for deconvoluting EIS data from electrolysis cells will be introduced, providing a deeper insight into electrode reactions, and therefore will support the identification of the most accurate models. Furthermore, thermochemical simulations will be carried out to provide information on changes in electrochemical activity and complement experimental results. As a result of this research project, a completely novel measurement technique will be developed for SOEC technology. From a practical point of view, the project will surely significantly contribute to the knowledge about the coelectrolysis process, deliver a wide spectrum of fundamental data for further research, and influence our understanding of Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells.
