During the COVID-19 pandemic, physical activity was shown to reduce the risk of infection and increase the likelihood of recovery from COVID-19. This sheds new light on the enormous opportunities for public health. At the same time, the pandemic has highlighted systemic structural inequalities in access to physical activity and unmet social needs that contribute to poor health.
Effective and equitable social policies are needed to mitigate these effects. The PA-EPI Index is a tool for assessing the degree of implementation of public policies to promote physical activity and create a healthy environment. The project aims to adapt this index to assess the impact of public policies on health equity (e.g., equal access to sports infrastructure, bicycle paths, green spaces) and will be used to examine the degree of implementation of government actions in relation to best practices in six European countries (Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Lithuania and Ireland).
