The influence of variable load conditions on fatigue characteristics of cement-bitumen composites prepared by cold recycling technology

Cement-bituminous composites produced in the cold recycling technology are characterized by high variability of properties, due to the use of two binders - cement and bitumen emulsion, which bind the material in a different way. The tests of mechanical properties, such as the stiffness modulus and strength, show that their values depend on many factors, such as: time from compaction, temperature, loading time, method of compaction, the ratio of binding agents, the type of constituent materials, such as reclaimed asphalt and the aggregate used. mineral, as well as the type of cement and asphalt emulsion grade and the properties of the base bitumen. In recent years, it has been the subject of very intensive research by scientific teams from Poland, Italy, France, the Czech Republic, China and the United States. While the characteristics of the mechanical properties of such composites are already quite detailed, some research areas, such as fatigue characteristics or the linearity of properties of cement-bituminous composites, are unrecognized. Single studies described in the literature were not conducted in an orderly manner, taking into account the large variability of the properties of the analyzed composites. The aim of the proposed research task is to initially identify the variability of fatigue properties of cement-bituminous composites prepared and compacted in two ways - with the use of laboratory equipment and with the use of full-scale construction machines in a typical construction regime tested under variable load conditions - variable conditions of controlled deformation of test samples. It is planned to use one prescription of cement-bituminous composite - built into the field section (located in the area of the S5 expressway near the city of Świecie) and to recreate it from the same components in the laboratory. As part of the research, the impact of preparation and compaction of composite samples and the impact of load variability (changes in controlled deformation during tests) on the fatigue life of the composite will be analyzed.
