The aim of our regular SOVtBAL project will produce a concept design for a autonomous or semi-autonomous, ecological hybrid-driven vessel, supporting the operations of offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea and other seas. Our proposed craft will be designed as a Service Operational Vessel (SOV).
The current situation is a dynamic development of autonomous systems in many areas. This is due to the desire to reduce the need for people working in boring and dangerous conditions. The maritime industry is also showing a rapidly growing interest in autonomous systems. The offshore renewables sector has been slow to react and consider how it can utilise autonomous systems. The sector is still intensely dependent on human intervention across the entire lifecycle – from site assessment and installation to routine operations and maintenance. It can by shown that use of SOV in commercial applications can lead to two main benefits: Improvements in safety and Cost savings.
Next generation of vessels consider new alternative propulsion and fuelling methods. These could include electric, hybrid and hydrogen and offer offshore charge. Hydrogen drive is considered to be the future of transport.
The offshore fleet, due to the operation of facilities of strategic importance for the state's energy security and meet the definition of critical infrastructure, should be subject to the full jurisdiction of the state. Therefore in the scope of the proposed project for an autonomous ship, reference should be made to the legal conditions regulating the future operation of the ship both in maritime areas included in the coastal state's territory and in areas outside state jurisdiction (e.g. Exclusive Economic Zone).
The seed funding is needed because it will allow specialists from many fields to meet in order to develop assumptions for a large interdisciplinary project, and in the future to build real objects.
