A New Coupler Concept for Contactless High-Speed Data Transmission Monitoring

Abstract

This paper presents a new concept of a couplerthat can be applied to high-speed data transmission contactlessmeasurements. The proposed approach is dedicated for differentialsignal transmission monitoring in microstrip coupled lineson printed circuit boards (PCBs). The coupler, produced on aseparate PCB, is overlayed on the transmission line with thedifferential signal and delivers decoupled differential signal tothe main measurement path. The main advantage of this solutionis that no dedicated connectors are required for the measurementprocess, which results in product cost reduction and designsimplification. The complete design methodology of the proposedcoupler has been described. Theoretical considerations have beenconfirmed by the example coupler prototype that was fabricatedand measured. The measurement results show that the proposedconcept may be advantageous for contactless signal monitoring inwidely used high-speed interconnections realized on cheap FR-4PCBs.
