Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in wastewater treatments

Abstract

Wastewater treatment processes focused on degradation of persistent organic pollutants are mainly based on Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs). These methods use reactive species, such as hydroxyl radicals, sulfate radicals, superoxide radicals or singlet oxygen to efficiently oxidize medicines, insecticides and industrial compounds. Several types of oxidants are used as sources of radicals including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), ozone (O3), persulfates. Activation methods include thermal activation, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic activation (including Fenton chemistry), photochemistry and photocatalytic processes, cavitation and ozone nanobubbles. Herein, principles and radicals generation mechanisms of various AOP approaches along with their applications are discussed. Finally, special focus is made on implementation issues, advantages and challenges in this field.
