Challenges for universities in the face of the knowledge-based economy - Directions for higher education institutions in the Baltic Sea Region
Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present new challenges that are faced by universities in the knowledge-based economy. There are several phenomena that can presently be observed like the need for life-long learning or interdisciplinary approach, and universities should prepare their graduates for those challenges. One of the crucial questions that universities need to ask is how to teach and what to teach. Knowledge becomes obsolete so quickly that is has to be refreshed by graduates all the time. Therefore, new forms of learning and new curricula should be offered by higher education institutions. With the constant development of information and communication technologies new teaching possibilities like for example e-learning occur. The paper proposes valuable guidelines for universities to cope with the above-mentioned challenges. One of the most important directions is to transform universities into learning organizations and implement the concept of entrepreneurial university. This might allow universities to become competitive on the market and to deal with new challenges in a successful way. Case study from Poland will help to illustrate the above-mentioned issues.
