Determination of Butyltin Species in Sea Water Samples Using Solid Phase Extraction Followed by Liquid Chromatography - Tandem Mass Spectrometry
Abstract
Reverse phase liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC)-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS-MS) was evaluated for the analysis of TBT using solid phase extraction as sample preparation method. TBT was extracted from acidified water samples (spiked with tripropyltin as internal standard) using reversed phase polymeric Strata-X cartridges. Analytes were eluted from cartridges using acetonitrile-water mixture and the volume of eluate was reduced under the stream of nitrogen. Resulting solution was directly analyzed by LC-ESI-MS/MS. Tandem mass spectrometer was working in MRM mode to achieve highest possible sensitivity and selectivity. Using the proposed method, it was possible to determine concentrations of TBT in seawater at ppb levels. Method provides LOD and LOQ of 0,3 ng l -1 and 1 ng l -1 respectively and is linear in working range. Obtained results proved that developed method is suitable for TBT monitoring in aquatic environment.
