Abstract

Grinding operations are carried out with a variety of tool-workpiece configurations. The selection of a grinding process for a particular application depends on part shape, part size, ease of fixture, requirements concerning the acceptable shape errors. It is evident that lapping is very effective in eliminating the waviness while surface grinding is not. Dual disk machines for the double face grinding with planetary kinematics are machines that enable processing the workpieces with coplanar functional areas. Grinding (flat honing, fine grinding) with the use of grinding wheels mounted on a double-disk lapping machine is widely used in practice Single-disk machines can be used for single side grinding without the chuck-related problems as in conventional surface grinding. There is no thermal damage to the surface of the tool and the ground workpiece surface due to the law cutting speeds. This research paper deals with a modified configuration of a conventional single-disk lapping machine in which the rotational velocity of a workpiece holder can be precisely controlled by a stepper motor. Two types of tools were used for experiments. The first tool was equipped with grinding inserts made of resin and synthetic diamond micrograins (grit size 3/2). In the second stage of experiments the single-layer electroplated diamond tool (D107) was applied. Ceramics workpieces (Al2O3) were machined on the modified single-disc lapping machine with the use of both tools. Experimental results of removal rates and surface roughness parameters are the subject of the presented paper. The paper presents also the mathematical model and simulation results for some kinematical parameters.
