Pedestrian on footbridges, vertical loads and response

Abstract

The paper is a synthesis of the experimental and theoretical investigations on dynamics of pedestrian bridges under vertical load The subject is divided into four issues.1) The pedestrian as a vertical dynamic load on footbridges, theoretic load function for walking and crouching.2) Crowd walking on the footbridge - pedestrian flow.3) Vertical lock-in effect.4) Response of the footbridge - numeric and side test results, - deck vertical vibrations under vertical excitation, - deck lateral vibrations under vertical excitation, - cable stayed footbridge - vibrations of stays.A special laboratory experiment was performed in order to develop universal load functions for walking and crouching. New load functions were used in the analysis of the dynamic response of existing footbridges. Numeric simulations were compared with experimental tests on real structures. The results and conclusions are presented. In the author's opinion, presented procedures for numeric analysis of footbridges are forceful and useful for estimating dynamic character of a footbridge at the design stage.
