Abstract
The term “productive aging” refers to the participation of older adults in different activities that contribute to generating goods and services and develop the capacity to produce goods and services. In that sense, it includes both the economic activity of this group – serving in the paid workforce – and its social productivity, understood as volunteer activities (Bass et al. 1993). In the broader sense, “productive aging” can also be understood as older persons’ assistance in families, activities which help to maintain older persons as independent as possible, as well as activities that are merely enriching seniors who perform them without any quantifiable economic benefit (Butler and Schechter 1995).
