The potential of enhancing denitrification in the activated sludge process with by-products from the alcohol production
Abstract
In this study, by-products from the alcohol production were examined in terms of their potential application as external carbon sources for enhancing denitrification in biological nutrient removal systems. Three kinds of experimental assays were used to compare the effects of the by-products with other external carbon sources (ethanol and acetic acid) and the settled wastewater. Based on the results obtained, it appears that one of the examined by-product (fusel oil) may be an interesting alternative for commercial compounds, such as methanol and ethanol. In the conventional batch experiments, the observed nitrate utilization rates (NURs) with fusel oil (= 2.5-2.7 g N/(kg VSS∙h) were higher in comparison with ethanol and methanol. The addition of fusel oil at the beginning of the anoxic phase (preceded by an anaerobic phase) did not appear to affect adversely the parallel P uptake rates and the observed NURs (= 3.5-4.3 g N/(kg VSS∙h)) were in the range of the rates observed with the other examined carbon sources. The yield coefficient for fusel oil was comparable to the yields with pure ethanol and acetate (obtained in this study and reported in literature).
