Abstract

One of the important parameters characterizing the quality of computer networks is the network's reliability with respect to failures of the communication links and nodes. This chapter investigated the reliability of tree and star networks. The tree and star topology is used in centralized computer networks. In centralized computer networks all communication must take place through some central computer. Following measures of network reliability are assumed: the expected number of nodes, which can communicate with the central node; the expected number of node pairs, which are connected by a path through the central node; the expected number of node pairs communicating. The numerical results are presented in subchapter 3. The values of reliability measures were counted for one, two, three, four-hop star and chain networks. The calculations were done as a function of a probability of link being operative. The numerical results obtained for these networks shown difference between them.Jednym z parametrów charakteryzującym jakość sieci jest jej niezawodność. Rozważono sieci o topologiach gwiaździstych oraz drzewiastych. Przyjęto następujący model uszkodzeń. Węzły oraz kanały sieci ulegają uszkodzeniom z określonym prawdopodobieństwem, uszkodzenia elementów sieci są od siebie statystycznie niezależne. Jako ocenę niezawodności tych sieci przyjęto: średnią liczbę sprawnych węzłów, które mogą komunikować się z węzłem centralnym; średnią liczbę sprawnych par węzłów, które mogą komunikować się poprzez węzeł centralny; średnią liczbę sprawnych par węzłów, które mogą komunikować się wzajemnie. Wyznaczono niezawodność sieci jako funkcję prawdopodobieństwa sprawności kanałów. Porównano sieci drzewiaste oraz gwiaździste pod względem niezawodności. Przeprowadzone badania wykazały, że różnice pomiędzy niezawodnością rozważanych struktur maleją wraz ze wzrostem stopnia oraz liczby węzłów sieci.
