Abstract
The return flows of reject water from sewage sludge dewatering alter the activated sludgeprocess in a conventional WWTP and increas TN concentration in final effluent from WWTPs.The objectives of the investigation carried out is to consider the application of sequential SS VFbeds and an SS HF bed for the treatment of highly polluted wastewater, namely reject waterfrom sewage sludge dewatering in a centrifuge (RWC). This paper aims to present the designand performance of each stage of the treatment as well as the total efficiency of pollutantremoval. This research illustrates that the TW could be successfully applied for the treatment ofhighly contaminated wastewater (reject water from centrifuge- RCW) .The full scale pilot plant for reject water from digested sludge dewatering consisted of two SSVF beds working in series, followed by an SS HF. The applied configuration ensured a veryhigh removal efficiency (COD - 76% and NH4+-N - 93.6%). In the investigated facilities, theSS VF beds ensured an effective removal of nitrogen compounds, especially NH4+ -N, whereasSS HF ensured a good environment for the decomposition of hardly degradable Org-N andCOD.
