The Highway and Transportation Engineering Department shows an over 70-year history. While performing a global vision of sustainable European transportation infrastructure we address the issues of traffic engineering, transportation engineering, road construction and maintenance incorporating innovative methods of planning and design of transportation network, novel road construction technologies, advanced methods of traffic and infrastructure management while reducing harmful impact on environment, safety and economy. We conduct research upon traffic, implementing the results in the form of novel guidelines to design roads or their elements. Our activities focus on safety issues of traffic participants and the development of safety management methods of road infrastructure. We develop advanced systems of traffic control, incorporating intelligent transportation systems, we also work on transportation management and municipal mobility, playing an active role in the planning of the transportation systems of the Tri-city and the Pomeranian Voivodeship. We conduct scientific research covering a series of issues of road, highway and airport construction featuring the problems of mechanics, design and testing of road pavements and asphalt mixtures, application of various bitumen types, application of geosynthetics, investigations in pavement recycling, rheological features of materials, low-temperature cracks, inter-layer cohesion, environmental impact and the application of noise-reducing, safe and ecological porous-elastic pavements.
