  • Luminance Distribution Measurements in CAVE-Type Virtual Reality Systems

In this article, the immerse 3D visualization lab just opened at the Gdańsk University of Technology is presented. The effect of user “immersion,” it such virtual reality systems, is largely dependent on the optical properties of projected images. Luminance distribution of screens was measured and the luminance uniformity was determined and discussed.

  • Modeling of luminance distribution in CAVE-type virtual reality systems

    Publication

At present, one of the most advanced virtual reality systems are CAVE-type (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) installations. Such systems are usually consisted of four, five or six projection screens and in case of six screens arranged in form of a cube. Providing the user with a high level of immersion feeling in such systems is largely dependent of optical properties of the system. The modeling of physical phenomena plays nowadays...

  • Analysis of luminance distribution uniformity in CAVE-type virtual reality systems

    Publication

In recent years, many scientific and industrial centers in the world developed a virtual reality systems or laboratories. The effect of user “immersion” into virtual reality in such systems is largely dependent of optical properties of the system. In this paper, problems of luminance distribution uniformity in CAVE-type virtual reality systems are analyzed. For better characterization of CAVE luminance nonuniformity corner and...

  • Measurement of luminance and color uniformity of displays using the large-format scanner

    Publication

    - Year 2017

Uniformity of display luminance and color is important for comfort and good perception of the information presented on the display. Although display technology has developed and improved a lot over the past years, different types of displays still present a challenge in selected applications, e.g. in medical use or in case of multi-screen installations. A simplified 9-point method of determining uniformity does not always produce...

  • Global Approaches to Reduce Light Pollution from Media Architecture and Non-Static, Self-Luminous LED Displays for Mixed-Use Urban Developments

    Publication

    - Sustainability - Year 2019

Urban environments have become significantly brighter and more illuminated, and cities now consider media architecture and non-static, self-luminous LED displays an essential element of their strategy to attract residents, visitors, and tourists in the hours after dark. Unfortunately, most often, they are not designed with care, consideration, and awareness, nor do they support the visual wellbeing and circadian rhythms of humans....

  • Daylight evaluation for multi-family housing in Poland

    Publication

    - Year 2019

This PhD dissertation focuses on methods of daylight appraisal useful in the design of the contemporary multifamily housing. The theoretical part of the thesis offers a review of daylight indicators, evaluations methods and tools within the built environment. It covers a review of daylight recommendations found in building standards and other normative documents affecting the design of the residential spaces. A pilot work survey...

  • Automatic system for optical parameters measurements of biological tissues

In this paper a system allowing execution of automatic measurements of optical parameters of scattering materials in an efficient and accurate manner is proposed and described. The system is designed especially for measurements of biological tissues including phantoms, which closely imitate optical characteristics of real tissue. The system has modular construction and is based on the ISEL system, luminance and color meter and...

  • Controlling computer by lip gestures employing neural network

    Publication

    - Year 2010

Results of experiments regarding lip gesture recognition with an artificial neural network are discussed. The neural network module forms the core element of a multimodal human-computer interface called LipMouse. This solution allows a user to work on a computer using lip movements and gestures. A user face is detected in a video stream from a standard web camera using a cascade of boosted classifiers working with Haar-like features....

  • Lighting requirements for pedestrian crossings - positive contrast

    Publication

    - MATEC Web of Conferences - Year 2019

For many years now in Poland there has been a large number of road accidents at pedestrian crossings during night periods [5, 11]. One of the technical solutions that can improve this condition is the use of proper lighting for pedestrian crossings. The designated pedestrian crossing should be visible in different weather conditions and at different times of the day. In case of night vision restrictions use artificial lighting...

  • Journey towards light – evolutionary adaptations of humans, flora and fauna. Guidelines for safe and healthy illumination

    Publication
    • K. M. Zielińska-Dąbkowska

    - Year 2014

The paper examines using relatively recent discoveries on how evolution has embedded within all living organisms a natural sensitivity towards their native environment, in particular luminance levels and specific wavelengths of light. The studies conducted so far indicate that lighting installations that are visible after dark impact on humans, flora and fauna and influence our evolutionary dispositions, possibly with negative...

  • The short-term flicker severity level measured in the industrial power system supplying the rolling mill motors

The dataset presents a short-term flicker severity level measured on the bus bars of the main switchgear of the industrial power network for the supply of rolling mills. The data were obtained during an experiment whose purpose was to determine a level of short-term and long-term flicker caused by voltage fluctuations. In the virtual application of...

  • Literature review of user needs, toward user requirements

    Publication

    - Year 2020

This report has been developed in the frame of the IEA SHC Task 61 Subtask A “User requirements”. The main objective was to rethink and reformulate user requirements to lighting (daylighting and electric lighting) in public buildings on the basis of a thorough literature study. The work is a joint effort of a number of scientists and represents collective knowledge in this topic. The concept of Lighting quality is the one, among...
