Cheap Cancellation of Strong Echoes for Digital Passive and Noise Radars
PublicationThe problem of cancellation of strong, potentially nonstationary, echoes in noise radars and passive radars utilizing digitaltransmissions is considered. The proposed solution is a multi-stage procedure.Initial clutter estimates, obtained using the least mean squares(LMS) algorithm, are refined using specially designed filters, "matched"to spectral densities of targets and clutter. When the postprocessing filtersare noncausal, the...

Measurements of Two-phase Flows in Pipelines Using Radioisotopes and Statistical Signal Processing
PublicationThis paper presents an application of radiotracers and gamma absorption method in two-phase flow measurements in pipelines. Two different methods were implemented to analysis of acquired signals. Investigated methods are based on the cross-correlation function and the phase of the cross-spectral density distribution. The examples presented in the article illustrate the application of the radioisotopes to evaluation of liquid-gas...

Online sound restoration system for digital library applications
PublicationAudio signal processing algorithms were introduced to the new online non-commercial service for audio restoration intended to enhance the content of digitized audio repositories. Missing or distorted audio samples are predicted using neural networks and a specific implementation of the Jannsen interpolation method based on the autoregressive model (AR) combined with the iterative restoring of missing signal samples. Since the distortion...

Spectral Analysis of Capital Markets
PublicationIn this paper the problem of cycles existence in capital markets is addressed. A spectral analysis algorithm, which reduces signal-to-noise ratio, is proposed to derive cycle periodograms for the yield function of DJIA, WIG~20, and NIKKEI 225 indices. Peaks of the the periodograms provide premises to postulate the existence of some possible cycles. The 3.5 year periodicity in all 3 indices, which can be related to Kitchin cycle...

Adaptive acoustic crosstalk cancellation in mobile computer device
PublicationThe cancellation of acoustic crosstalk is employed to enhance the stereo image in mobile listening conditions. A practical setup employing a mobile computer is employed. The adaptation of the crosstalk cancellation filter to the position of the listener's head is featured. The measurement evaluating the possibility of practical application of the method are described. The head and torso simulator was used for measurements. The...

Assessment of Fuel Cells’ State of Health by Low-Frequency Noise Measurements
PublicationWe proposed applying low-frequency (flicker) noise in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells under selected loads to assess their state of health. The measurement set-up comprised a precise data acquisition board and was able to record the DC voltage and its random component at the output. The set-up estimated the voltage noise power spectral density at frequencies up to a few hundred mHz. We observed the evolution of the electrical...

Optical properties of thin TiO2 film deposited on the fiber optic sensor head
PublicationThe presented study was focused on investigation of the titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin film deposited on the fiber tip. The intention of this investigation was using TiO2 film in the construction of the optical fiber sensor head. In the demonstrated construction TiO2 thin layer was deposited on the tip of a commonly used telecommunication single mode optical fiber (SMF-28) by means of the Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD). Thickness...

Distribution of roughness and waviness components of turned surface profiles
PublicationThe paper presents a spectral formulation of surface profile irregularity in a wideband frequency range for roughness, waviness and shape components along the measured length. A unique distribution of roughness and waviness components is proposed, according to the nature of their origination in the course of machining with tools of defined cutting edge, as distinct from standard filtration in measurements of surface irregularities....

Quadratic Cohen representations in spectral analysis of serration process in Al–Mg alloys
PublicationImportant from mechanical point of view the Portevin–Le Chatelier serration phenomenon is being characterized by a complicated spectral profile. As a typical example of nonstationary processes it demands a special treatment allowing to follow the evolution of energy of stress fluctuations as a function of strain. The authors suggest the utilization of a compact system of quadratic transformations, known as Cohen class, as a technique...

Hydration of amino acids: FTIR spectra and molecular dynamics studies
PublicationThe hydration of selected amino acids, alanine, glycine, proline, valine, isoleucine and phenylalanine, has been studied in aqueous solutions by means of FTIR spectra of HDO isotopically diluted in H2O. The difference spectra procedure and the chemometric method have been applied to remove the contribution of bulk water and thus to separate the spectra of solute-affected HDO. To support interpretation of obtained spectral results,...

On adaptive covariance and spectrum estimation of locally stationary multivariate processes
PublicationWhen estimating the correlation/spectral structure of a locally stationary process, one has to make two important decisions. First, one should choose the so-called estimation bandwidth, inversely proportional to the effective width of the local analysis window, in the way that complies with the degree of signal nonstationarity. Too small bandwidth may result in an excessive estimation bias, while too large bandwidth may cause excessive...
