Reliability model of slide bearings with particular attention given to lubricating oil
PublicationThe paper presents the slide bearing with circulating lubrication as a system of series three-element structure, where lubricating oil is the weakest link. In accordance with the Pierce statement that ''strength of chain is the strength of its weakest link'', a bearing reliability model has been developed. It allows to use the lubricating oil to evaluate the probability of correct working of the whole slide bearing, i.e. the reliability....

Application of OFDM technique to underwater acoustic data transmission
PublicationPerformances of underwater acoustic communication (UAC) digital systems are strongly related to specific transmission properties of the underwater channel. Depending on the characteristics of the channel, an architecture and modulation techniques are usually implemented that are known as reliable solutions for data transmission in difficult radio channels. The OFDM technique seems to be the most promising nowadays. The parameters...

Peptide conjugates of lactoferricin analogues and antimicrobials—Design, chemical synthesis, evaluation of antimicrobial activity and mammalian cytotoxicity
PublicationEight new peptide conjugates composed of modified bovine lactoferricin truncated analogues (LFcinB) and oneof the three antimicrobials — ciprofloxacin (CIP), levofloxacin (LVX), and fluconazole (FLC) — were synthesized. Four different linkers were applied to connect a peptide and an antimicrobial agent. The FLC-containing peptidic conjugates were synthesized using the “click chemistry” method. This novel approach is reported here...

Mapping negative unintended consequences of disruptive technologies use in smart cities
PublicationSmart cities governance (SCG) consists of both to foster technology-enabled innovation, and to utilize disruptive technologies (DT) outcomes and impacts to increase public value of urban services. Despite widespread discussion of DT benefits, scientific literature identifies multiple determinants of unintended negative consequences (UC) of DT deployment in smart city initiatives. By considering UC as the negative aspects resulting...

Assessing sustainable development goal 7 implementation and its nexus with social, economic and ecological factors in EU countries
PublicationThis research paper delves into the captivating realm of sustainable development, specifically focusing on assessing the degree of implementation of sustainable development goal 7 (SDG7) and its intricate relationship with social, economic and ecological factors within European Union (EU) countries. By comprehensively unravelling the interplay between SDG7 and these multifaceted factors, this study provides invaluable insights...

Assessing historical church tower asymmetry using point cloud spatial expansion
PublicationChurch towers are key cultural heritage. In theory, towers are vertical, while facade elements are symmetrically positioned around the tower axis. However, during service of a structure, building and lifetime conditions cause deviations, with associated risks. Laser scanning point clouds can be used to assess the structural state but a universal approach was missing. The proposed algorithm first estimates the tower inclination,...

Nutrient transport and acquisition by diatom chains in a moving fluid
PublicationThe role of fluid motion in delivery of nutrients to phytoplankton cells is a fundamental question in biological and chemical oceanography. In the study of mass transfer to phytoplankton, diatoms are of particular interest. They are non-motile, are often the most abundant components in aggregates and often form chains, so they are the ones expected to benefit most from enhancement of nutrient flux due to dissipating turbulence....

Collagen Type II—Chitosan Interactions as Dependent on Hydroxylation and Acetylation Inferred from Molecular Dynamics Simulations
PublicationChitosan–collagen blends have been widely applied in tissue engineering, joints diseases treatment, and many other biomedical fields. Understanding the affinity between chitosan and collagen type II is particularly relevant in the context of mechanical properties modulation, which is closely associated with designing biomaterials suitable for cartilage and synovial fluid regeneration. However, many structural features influence...

Teaching of Robot Arm Programming - Tasks with Increasing Difficulty
PublicationThe article describes education techniques using robotics. For example, educational exercises on programming the Nachi MZ04 robotic arm are presented. The exercises use a wooden railroad toy model and elements printed in additive manufacturing technology. The exercises have increasing difficulty and can be used to educate young people in high school and specialized higher engineering studies (both bachelor's and master's).

A Cu/Zn heterometallic complex with solvent-binding cavity, catalytic activity for the oxidation of 1-phenylethanol and unusual magnetic properties
PublicationMononuclear and polymeric complexes of zinc(II) and copper(II) have been synthesized using two isomers of the hemi-salen ligand with a different mutual orientation of donor atoms. The heterometallic Cu/Zn metallocycle features a catalytic niche filled with the molecule of water and molecules of methanol. This unusual compound exhibits both pronounced catalytic activity in the reaction of oxidation of a secondary alcohol to ketone...

GRA1 protein vaccine confers better immune response compared to codon-optimized GRA1 DNA vaccine
PublicationW publikacji oszacowano immunogenność i właściwości protekcyjne szczepionki anty-Toxoplasma gondii opartej na białku rekombinantowym GRA1 oraz dwóch rodzajach szczepionek DNA (plazmidu zawierającego gen kodujący białko GRA1 dzikiego typu oraz modyfikowanego genu kodującego białko GRA1). Uzyskane wyniki sugerują lepsze właściowści immunoprotekcyjne rekombinantowego białka antygenowego niż szczepionek DNA.

Algorithm for Automatic Wear Estimation of Railway Contact Strips Based on 3D Scanning Results
PublicationElectric rail vehicles use current collection system which consists of overhead contact line and a current collector (pantograph) mounted on the roof of a vehicle. A pantograph is equipped with contact strips, which slide along the contact wire, ensuring steady electric contact. Contact strips are made of carbon layer, fixed to an aluminum carrier. The carbon layer wears down due to friction. Using overly worn contact strips increases...
