Implementation of magnitude calculation of complex numbers using improved alpha max plus beta min algorithm
PublicationThe paper presents the hardware implementation of the improved alpha max plus beta min algorithm for calculating the magnitude of complex numbers. This version of the algorithm requires the general division which is performed using a noniterative multiplicative division algorithm. We analyze in detail the division algorithm, its error and the impact of finite word-length signal representations on the assumed total computation error....

Pounding between Inelastic Three-Storey Buildings under Seismic Excitations
PublicationStructural interactions between adjacent, insufficiently separated buildings have been repeatedly observed during damaging ground motions. This phenomenon, known as the structural pounding, may result in substantial damage or even total collapse of structures. The aim of the present paper is to show the results of the nonlinear numerical analysis focused on pounding between inelastic three-storey buildings under seismic excitations....

A city is not a tree: a multi-city study on street network and urban life
PublicationChristopher Alexander, a British-American scholar, differentiated an old (natural) city from a new (planned) one by structure. The former resembles a “semilattice”, or a complex system encompassing many interconnected sub-systems. The latter is shaped in a graph-theoretical “tree”, which lacks the structural complexity as its sub-systems are compartmentalized into a single hierarchy. This structural distinction explains why, or...

THE INFLUENCE OF POLYMER STRIPS IN REDUCTION OF A STEEL GRANDSTAND VIBRATIONS
PublicationGrandstands are types of structures commonly used during sport events or music concerts. Dynamic loads generated by crowd movement may have significant influence on human perception as well as may lead to the destruction of a structure. Lighter and more slender structural steel members are more easily excitable by spectators. If the synchronized movement is tuned with the natural frequency of the affected part of the structure,...

Earthquake-induced pounding between asymmetric steel buildings
PublicationEarthquake-induced pounding between buildings has been the subject of numerous numerical and experimental studies in the resent years. The phe-nomenon may cause severe damage to structural elements as well as may also lead to the total collapse of colliding structures. A major reason leading to pounding between adjacent, insufficiently separated buildings results from the differences in their dynamic properties. The aim of this...

Reservoir Influence on Pressure Wave Propagation in Steel Pipes
PublicationThe relation between the length of steel pipe and the pressure wave period in the system, reservoir-pipe-valve, is discussed. Experiments carried out for the short steel pipes showed that in such a system, the pressure wave celerity estimated using the measured wave cycles systematically increases with the increase of the pipe length. The observed differences can exceed even 90 m=s. As the pressure wave traveling in the pipe with...
