Biography
Sławomir Milewski, born in 1955 in Puck, Poland, graduated in 1979 in Chemistry from the Faculty of Chemistry, Gdańsk University of Technology (GUT). In 1984 was employed at the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biochemistry. In 1985 he got his PhD, in 1994 became a DSc (habilitation) and in 2002 got the professorship in chemical sciences. Currently he is a full professor and Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Biochemistry. In 1999-2002 Professor Milewski was a Vice-dean for Science, in 2002-2005 and from 2012 is a Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry GUT. Head of the Centre of Excellence ChemBioFarm (2004-2010), member of the GUT Senate from 2002. Member of the Central Commission for Scientific Degrees and Titles (2011-2012). In 2008 – 2014 was a GUT representative in Supervisory Board of the Bio-Baltica Co.
Scientific activity of Professor Milewski and his coworkers is focused on searching and rational design of potential chemotherapeutics for the treatment of systemic mycoses caused by human pathogenic fungi, including the multidrug-resistant species. The main subject of interest are the derivatives of polyene macrolide antibiotic and amino acid and peptide antifungals. An important part of Professor Milewski’s group is identification and characteristics of novel molecular targets for antifungal chemotherapy, especially enzymes participating in amino acid biosynthesis and in formation of components of the fungal cell wall. Publication record of Professor Milewski covers more than 240 items, including over 90 articles in peer-reviewed international scientific journals, 2 book chapters and 14 patents. He served as a reviewer in 27 PhD, habilitation or professorship procedures and was a leader in 11 research grants. Publications of Professor Milewski have been cited over 1000 times by other authors, with HI = 21. A member of the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Microbiology. Prof. Milewski has been a supervisor of 14 young scientists who got their PhD and is currently a supervisor of further 4 PhD students. In the 1993-1994 period Dr. Milewski was the Royal Society Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Aberdeen, UK. He has been also several times a visiting scientist or visiting professor at the Walsh University in Bangor, UK, University of Guanajuato, Mexico, University of Camerino, Italy and Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. Professor Milewski and his team cooperate with numerous research partners from USA, Canada, Italy, France, Germany, Brasil, Czech Republic and India.
Married, two children and two grandchildren. Hobbies – mountain trekking, good music and film.
