Abstrakt
In landfills containing biological matter volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are generated at high rate at the early stage of waste disposal and their content in leachate is high as compared to the leachate from old parts of landfill since they are converted to methane gas. Monitoring of the leachate for the content of VFAs can help determine the processes occurring in waste and possible effect of the leachate on the environment in the case of some leakage. Malodorous gases include mainly H2S (around 3000 ppmv) and some volatile fatty acids (VFAs). VFAs such as acetic and propionic are produced in high amounts during the initial phase of anaerobic processes. Due to the high aqueous solubility of these compounds, they are found in very low concentrations in the gaseous phase. VFAs contribute to the nuisance odor characteristics of the gas stream. Since VFAs are present in low concentrations, they may represent a malodorous problem.
