Framework for ship weather routing assessment considering the impact of different hull maintenance strategies during operational life
Abstrakt
This paper presents a novel framework for analysing the impact of hull maintenance strategies on a vessel’s ability to follow the shortest possible shipping routes under unfavourable sea conditions. A case study investigates a vessel operating over a 30-year period on a transatlantic route, evaluating various maintenance strategies ranging from minimal to standard and ideal (i.e., perfect) maintenance approaches. The analysis explores how these strategies influence hull degradation and the associated probability of hull failure, as characterised by the utilisation factor, and their implications for maintaining the intended route. The findings indicate that an appropriately selected hull maintenance strategy can significantly enhance a vessel’s capacity to navigate close to the great-circle route, even under persistent adverse weather conditions. The conclusions serve as a foundation for developing recommendations aimed at optimising long-term maintenance strategies for seagoing vessels over operational lifespans of 30 years or more.
