Abstrakt

The high abundance of fecal bacteria in surface water is usually related to poor agricultural practice, pollution caused by domesticated and wild animals as well as with septic tank failures. Identification of fecal contamination sources seems to be crucial in order to effectively estimate the inherent risk. In this study, the phylogenetic relationship of 30 isolates of E. coli, originated from surface water, was estimated by employing a BOX-PCR fingerprinting method. The considered isolates were resistant to at least one of the 19 antimicrobial agents (aminoglycosides, carbapenems, cephalosporins, folate antagonists, fluoroquinolones, monobactam, penicillins, penicillins/-lactamase inhibitors, and tetracycline), selected because of their importance in treating E. coli infections. Among E. coli isolated from the Oliwski Stream phylogenetic analyses have indicated predominance of group A, whereas the isolates from the Reda River represented all phylogenetic groups. It was also observed that isolates from phylogenetic group B2, frequently including extra-intestinal E. coli with virulence determinants, were less resistant to the tested antimicrobial agents than isolates from other groups. This work, on a relatively small number of E. coli, demonstrated that phylogenetic structure of riverine isolates is influenced by catchments characteristic. Further studies on environmental strains should include hydrological and medical data considering geographical usage of antimicrobials among human and animal. Additionally, bacterial cell characteristics like virulence factors are needed.
