Biotrickling filtration of air polluted with hexane and cyclohexane: effects of trickling liquid modification with DES solutions

Description

Dataset presents selected parameters monitored during processes of biotrickling filtration of air polluted with hexane and cyclohexane.

Following results are presented:

a. Effects of trickling liquid composition on changes of optical density (OD) values;

b. Influence of trickling liquid composition on the changes of its pH value;

c. Effects of DES addition on the surface tension of trickling liquid;

d. Effects of DES addition on the zeta potential of particles from trickling liquid suspension;

e. Performance of biotrickling filtration of air polluted with hexane and cyclohexane with trickling liquid without DES modification - biotrickling filter A;

f. Performance of biotrickling filtration of air polluted with hexane and cyclohexane with trickling liquid with DES1 additive (3% v/v; DES1: choline chloride : ethylene glycol) - biotrickling filter B;

g. Performance of biotrickling filtration of air polluted with hexane and cyclohexane with trickling liquid with DES2 additive (3% v/v; DES2: L-carnitine : C-8 acid) - biotrickling filter C.

OD values were determined spectrophotometrically (Shimadzu UV-3600). pH values were measured using Voltcraft pH-100 ATC pH-meter. Surface tension was measured using Kruss K10 tensiometer. Zeta potential was determioned using Malvern ZetaSizer Nano ZS.

Biotrickling filtration experiments were run in counter-current plexiglass biotrickling filters, packed with polyurethane foam discs, inoculated with Candida subhashii prior to starting the experiments. Biofilters were run at empty bed residence time of 60s. Biofilters were fed with a mixture of hexane and cyclohexane (1:1 v/v), the results are presented for hexane. Concentrations of hexane and cyclohexane at the inlet and outlet of biotrickling filters were determined using Varian CP-3800 gas chromatograph equipped with a flame ionization detector.
