Study of the correlation between the emission intensity of the airborne wear particles from the friction materials and the brake disc surface roughness

According to the 2019 World Health Organization report, air pollution leads to millions of human deaths each year. During the braking process of a transport, a significant number of brake wear particles are emitted into the atmosphere. Such particles penetrate the human body through air, water or food, which can result in the development of various diseases. This situation is particularly actual for residents of large cities and regions with a developed transport system. For this reason, the prediction and monitoring of the emission of brake wear particles into the atmosphere is an important and actual problem at the intersection of tribology, aerosol science and ecology. With the participation of the Applicant, the phenomena of friction and wear, in particular the emission of brake wear particles, are investigated at the Center of Nanotechnology at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology of Gdańsk University of Technology. The generation of brake wear particles occurs as a result of friction of the brake material in the form of a pin, working against a steel disc. The tests are carried out on a T-11 tribometer. The friction couple is installed in an isolated clean chamber to exclude the influence of other sources of nanoparticles. Sampling and size classification of brake wear particles are performed using the Dekati ELPI+ cascade impactor (measured particle size range is 0.006-10 µm). Such experiment allows for comprehensive testing of tribological and ecological properties of brake materials. The purpose of the study is to identify the correlation between the emission intensity, morphological characteristics (size, structure, shape, etc.), chemical composition of wear particles and the roughness of the brake disc sample surface. To achieve this purpose, the conduction of a series of experimental tests of brake materials (i.e. SM (semi-metal), LM (low-metal), NAO (non-asbestos organic), etc.) used in vehicles, in friction contact with 40CrMo4 steel, at various sliding speeds (0.1–5 m / s), contact pressures (0.1–1 MPa) and roughness (Ra0 .2–3.2) is planned. Wear particles collected on Dekati ELPI+ filters will be studied using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy techniques. The obtained correlations will allow to predict the brake wear particles emission intensity from the brakes into the atmosphere.
