Effective production method and characteristics of nanocomposite SCOBY nanocellulose- hydroxyapatite from waste products of the drink industry for applications in bone tissue engineering.

The project aims to utilize waste product generated during the production of a beverage called Kombucha to create a nanocomposite material, nanocellulose/hydroxyapatite, for use in bone tissue engineering. The proposed research in the project is of a preliminary nature and involves producing Kombucha and using its waste product, namely SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast) nanocellulose, to develop a composite material. This process includes incorporating hydroxyapatite nanoparticles into the resulting membrane using two microbiological methods. If the physicochemical investigations and morphological analysis confirm the desired nanocomposite's successful formation, it will undergo basic tests to determine whether it meets the fundamental requirements for mechanical properties suitable for bone tissue engineering applications. If the research proves successful, the next step will involve applying for a SONATA or OPUS type project funded by the National Science Centre (NCN) or a project in collaboration with a company producing bacterial nanocellulose for medical applications (funded by the National Centre for Research and Development - NCBiR).
