The Scientific association of Chemists at the Gdańsk University of Technology has been organizing quarterly studies of the quality of surface waters in the Coastal Landscape Park for over 9 years. During the camp, we collect numerous samples from around 40 different measurement points located on an area of over 350 km ^ 2. With the help of a portable multifunction meter, spectrophotometry and ion chromatography, we evaluate how anthropo pressure affects our environment. By continuous water monitoring, we are able to accurately determine the origin of pollutants, for example from industry, agriculture, households or municipal services. Once we know the etymology of the pollution, we can effectively prevent it in cooperation with the Coastal Landscape Park by notifying the competent authorities.
Recently, we diversified our research with microbiological analysis. Classic membrane filtration methods, however, require a great deal of time, both for filtering and for incubation. The possibility of using the qPCR method for this would be an significant improvement in our research work.
The technique of quantitative use of the PCR method using fluorescence techniques allows for continuous tracking of the amount of the product in real time. In addition, thanks to the fact that it allows an insight into the kinetics of the reaction, it can be used to estimate the initial amount of the product, which distinguishes it from the classic PCR method. This ensures speed and greater accuracy of the results.
Modern methods that students belonging to our Association could learn thanks to this project often turn out to be useful also when working outside the walls of the university.
