A tool for integrated numerical modeling of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) transport in vadose zone and groundwater

The main goal of MINIATURA project is to develop a new version of HYDRUS-MODFLOW software to integrated numerical modeling of groundwater flow and contamination transport (including PFAS) in unsaturated and saturated zone. In order to overcome difficulties, such as different numerical structure of both programmes, extrapolating 1D vadose zone model for lateral groundwater flow model, impact groundwater table fluctuations, it is necessary to consult with prof. Jirim Šimůnek form University of California (USA), who is an author of HYDRUS software, a distinguished expert in water flow modeling in variable saturated conditions (index H=108, ponad 48 000 citations). Grant MINIATURA is a preliminary investigation before main project related to identification of factors influencing PFAS transport in quaternary soils of northern Poland based on numerical simulations, laboratory and field investigations, which will be applied for (National Centre of Science, Poland - grants OPUS, SONATA or SONATINA). In that case the software developed in MINIATURA project will be used to numerical simulations including different conditions of unsaturated and saturated zone.
