South Baltic Green Decarbonization

The current situation on the raw material and energy market in Europe is dramatic and all possible actions should be taken to become as independent as possible from supplies, especially from uncertain directions such as Russia. Despite extensive EU action to remedy the fuel crisis, there is a huge risk that carbon dioxide emissions will rise and many years of action will be wiped out. In addition to importing LNG from other sources and expanding nuclear power units, biogas is one of the greatest potentials of EU countries. So far, it has been used primarily for combustion, which means that despite the recovery of energy from the valuable raw material, we emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, often together with other impurities typical of biogas, such as nitrogen and sulfur compounds. The aim of the project is to develop a new approach to biogas and treat it not only as an energy resource, but as a valuable resource for the modern economy, which enables the production of syngas, and the latter for the production of new products so as to close the carbon cycle and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. For this purpose, apart from a series of legal, administrative and economic analyses, testing of a technology that would be suitable for processing biogas and its processing into a chemical raw material should be carried out. The topic requires cross-border work because the approach of the EU countries, and in particular the South Baltic, must be integrated to protect the natural environment as much as possible. Therefore, as part of cross-border cooperation, we want to develop an appropriate approach, guidelines and technologies that will enable the reduction of one of the emissions from biogas. We want to test technologies for biogas production with the highest possible methane production, propose modern methods, including biological treatment of biogas streams, to reduce the emission of sulfur and nitrogen compounds into the atmosphere, and propose biogas conversion processes that convert methane and carbon dioxide, even additional admixture of carbon dioxide from flue gas will enable the production of syngas. Gdańsk University of Technology has great potential to join and coordinate this project on the Polish market, being a technological and information center for potential stakeholders. Moreover, we can use the budget from the seed fund for extensive international cooperation in the proposed project as well as in other EU pro-environmental projects.
