Advanced methods in biosensing: fundamentals and applications

This course provides instruction in the basic science and engineering concepts
required to understand the design and application of biosensors. Different biosensor
systems are explored, ranging from electrochemical devices, through to optical or
thermal systems. Instruction is also given in the general principles of sampling and
analysis, statistical presentation and manipulation of data. The primary focus will be
the physics of biomolecule detection in terms of three elementary concepts: response
time, sensitivity, and selectivity.
The course is designed to deliver to students knowledge on sensing applications of
different types of biosensors relating to environmental pollutants, microbiological
analysis, and healthcare. It describes state-of-the-art research in biosensors, point of
care testing, potential applications, as well as future prospects for biosensors.
Students of this course will not learn how to fabricate a sensor, but will be able to
decide what sensor to make, appreciate their design principles, interpret measured
results, and spot emerging research trends.
