Electrical stimulation of Anterior Thalamic Nuclei for memory modulation

The proposed project aims to develop effective strategies for memory enhancement using deep brain stimulation methods and revealing electrophysiological mechanisms underlying the effects of electrical stimulation of anterior thalamic nuclei in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Advanced electrophysiological recordings in rats will be used to understand how electrical stimulation affects neuronal activities locally at the site of stimulation and in the connected brain regions. This is only possible to study in animal models, where electrodes can be implanted deep in selected brain regions supoorting memory functions. Knowledge and the know-how from this study will inform the emerging technologiues and therapies for treating cognitive deficits in human brain disorders, which are developed at the Brain & Mind Electrophysiology laboratory led by Dr. Michal Kucewicz as part of the BioTechMed Center. These advanced electrophysiological studies are only performed at selected laboratories in Poland, Europe and in the world.
