Water Innovation system Amplifier

The main challenge addressed by this project is combating the effects of environmental pressures resulting from concentration of population and economic activities coastal areas, leading to eutrophication and biodiversity loss hazards as a consequence of nutrient discharges in the South Baltic catchment areas. However, with relevant cooperation, the potential for innovative, cost-effective solutions are great. To unlock this potential, stakeholders (researchers, companies and others) need access to functions for testing, skills and knowledge of problems related to water, that is, we need to develop a test-bed for water innovation, to develop the interconnected water innovation ecosystem in our region. Managing stormwater run-off is a challenge for seaport areas around the Baltic Sea region due to stormwater pollution imposing serious direct impacts on coastal water quality, public health and local environments. HELCOM has identified several major point sources of nutrient pollution in seaport areas. Based on Coalition Clean Baltic (CCB) findings: nutrient losses from ports facilities for handling fertilizer and fertilizer-related materials can constitute considerable point sources of nutrient pollution (up to several tons of directly bioavailable nitrogen and phosphorus per year). Such losses may occur mainly during ship loading/unloading operations (especially, if using outdated techniques), as well as from temporary open storage and improper stormwater management at port facilities. … At the same time, volumes of fertilizer cargo are steadily growing (33 million t/year in 2013 and ca. 45 million t/year in 2015). Even with a conservative estimate of 0,05% loss of bulk cargo a potential loss from 33 million tons of fertilizers handled in the Baltic Sea ports in 2013 would be ca. 16,7 thousand tons a year.
