Model-based optimization of the operational conditions for mitigation of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from an aerobic granular sludge reactor performing integrated nitrogen and phosphorus removal

The aim of the project is mitigation of N2O emissions from an aerobic granular sludge reactor operated by the project partner (University of Antwerp). The task of Gdańsk University of Technology is to develop a mathematical model of the reactor and perform simulations for process optimization. Specific objectives include: - Development, calibration and validation of the expanded mechanistic model for N2O production/emission considering nitric oxide (NO) as a model state variable - Development and testing different machine learning methods for predicting N2O production/emission - Development of a model-based protocol for the mitigation of N2O emission - Identification of the dominant N2O production pathway (hydroxylamine oxidation vs. heterotrophic denitrification) -Identification of the role of denitrifying PAOs in N2O production
