PER2Water – PERsistent organic pollutant remobilisation from PERmafrost into surface Waters

The project aims at assessing how intensive is the remobilisation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) from permafrost in the Kolyma region of Siberia, where such a problem has not been investigated yet. The human impact within that area is less pronounced than elsewhere in Siberia, where investigations have been undertaken so far. Hence, confirming a secondary source of POPs in that region will have important consequences for the understanding of the global distribution of pollutants. In the project, we plan to comprehensively determine, which POPs and when may be released from permafrost in the area, and estimate their total flux (in outflow), which is a piece of important information to assess their impact on ecosystems. For Gdansk Tech, the project will be an opportunity for gaining high-impact publications and for internationalisation, since there are co-investigators from the Russian research station in Kolyma included in the project.
