Enhancing High-Resolution Image Segmentation Precision through Collaborative Learning for Accurate Assessment of Axillary Lymph Node Metastasis in Full-Field Digital Mammography

EUropean Federation for CAncer IMages (EUCAIM) is funded under the Digital Europe Program. EUCAIM is part of Europe's Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP), which aims to foster innovation in digital technologies for cancer treatment, in order to make more precise and faster clinical decisions, diagnosis, treatment and predictive medicine. EUCAIM's mission is to build a pan-European digital infrastructure of cancer-related imaging data that will be used to develop AI tools aimed at advancing precision medicine. The EUCAIM competition in which we plan to participate aims, among other things, to include new holders of cancer imaging data and to incorporate new reliable and trustworthy AI algorithms trained on cancer image data into the repository. Currently, the EUCAIM consortium consists of 76 partners from 14 countries. Our PG team planned research will address the development of AI-based algorithms for early, non-invasive and automated lesion segmentation based on high-resolution digital mammography images. A system for collaborative learning of deep neural networks will be developed to classify and segment breast lesions, using medical annotation of images at the image level as well as the pixel level. In collaborative learning, pre-trained models will share generated masks. The data exchange will enable semi-supervised learning of the segmentation model, while the segmentator masks will be used to label individual instances of the MIL classifier. The planned approach assumes that simultaneous, joint (collaborative) learning of the classifier and segmentation mask generator will lead to their optimal use under the given conditions. The developed system will serve the early detection of breast cancer metastasis to lymph nodes. An important aspect of the competition is that the laureates become full members of the consortium. Participation in EUCAIM will enable access to state-of-the-art tools and resources, integration with leading scientific and research centers, presentation of research results internationally, as well as generation of ideas and critical research mass allowing application to subsequent international grants, including Horizon Europe or ERC. In addition, all PG teams, through our team, will have access to much of the data collected by the consortium.
